I was in a prayer meeting sometimes ago. The man leading the prayer led us to curse in Jesus name. I listened to another revered preacher who ended his provocative prayers with, "In Jesus name we have cursed." I have been to several prayer meetings and I have led corporate prayers in several meetings. Most times, when I check the content of our prayers, I see a sharp contrast with the kind of prayers prayed by holy men in scriptures. When you lead sensational prayers, people tend to pray with fervency but the moment you lead kingdom prayers, the attitude towards such prayers is very cold.
What do I mean by kingdom prayers? In my own definition, kingdom prayers are bible-based prayers that align us with God's perfect will, vitalize our spiritual life and makes us more like Christ. They're prayers that focus on eternity, not on mundane things. For example, the prayer of David in the opening text is one good example. He said, "Teach me your ways, O LORD, that I may live according to your truth! Grant me purity of heart, so that I may honor you.". Now, that's deep. The moment you begin to pray like this, you'll grow spiritually.
The reason your spiritual life is floppy is because you don't know the ways of the Lord. The moment you are taught the ways of the Lord, your life will align to the truth. Another point in that prayer is purity. He prayed that God should grant him purity of heart. I need this too. None of us has outgrown the battle with the flesh, it is an on-going battle. The seat of that battle is in our heart. The way to overcome is to have a pure heart. The man with pure heart have easy access to the throne heaven. "Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord ? or who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart;..."(Psalms 24:3-4 KJV). If we truly want to live a victorious Christian life like the saints of old did, we need to pray the prayers they prayed.
