BROTHER APOLLOS Part 3

Acts18:26 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately (NIV).

SUBMITTED HIMSELF AS A DISCIPLE

The notion of discipleship is well-defined among the Jewish community, yet individuals with a Western perspective may struggle to comprehend its true essence. As Africans, however, we possess some level of understanding regarding this concept.

Within the Jewish culture, apprenticeship programs are deeply ingrained in nearly every trade or profession and require a significant investment of time before one can become a master. It is not merely a one-year commitment but rather a lifelong pursuit.

I acknowledge that, even after attaining mastery in a profession, the previous master's years of experience may continue to warrant their recognition as such by graduate apprentices. This is why Jesus stated: "A servant cannot be greater than his master"(John 15:20).

Brother Apollos humbly submitted himself to learning and discipleship under Aquila and Priscilla, despite possessing extensive scriptural knowledge and boldly preaching in the synagogue. Although he may have been drawing crowds with his teachings, he recognized the value of receiving instruction from those who were more spiritually advanced than him.

One of the bane of fame and popularity in ministry is the feeling of "I don't need discipler". In fact, the anointed and famous may not listen to those he perceived haven't attained his height whereas depth is qualifies people to become disciplers not height.

You may have the height in ministry but someone who may be unknown have the depth you need to sustain that height. In such instances, it would be wise to seek out and learn from these individuals.

Apollos recognized the vital role of discipleship in achieving success and fulfillment in both his personal and spiritual pursuits. I pose this question to you: who is currently serving as your mentor or discipler?

Although some individuals may claim that the Holy Spirit fulfills this role, it remains true that even the most accomplished leaders within the kingdom have relied upon a strong support system comprised of trusted guides and mentors.

Despite Moses' close relationship, God did not teach him everything he needed to know. However, Jethro provided leadership and delegation guidance to Moses, even though his congregation was not as large as Moses'.

It is essential to remember that no matter how far one has progressed, sitting under a discipler and learning more is crucial. Regardless of how advanced you believe your knowledge to be, humbly submit yourself to a mentor and continue learning.

Action point
  • Heavenly Father, I beseech thee for the grace to fully embrace discipleship in the name of Jesus.
