After NYSC, I wanted to pastor any church that was available to employ me. I told a senior friend in the ministry about it and he asked that I check out one of the branches of his church somewhere in Lagos. He said If I was satisfied with the church, he would facilitate my absorption into the pastorate.
I was a postgraduate student then. I left school for his church in town. When I got there, I sat at the back. I opened my ears to listen to the sermon of their most senior pastor. Among several things, he said, "It is not only bread that come in nylon, brand new vehicles also come wrapped in nylon". Then he told us about his new vehicle.
The emphasis on his new vehicle took some time during his message. He told us how he could be in winter while his wife would be in summer in their new car. He was referring to how the cooling system in the vehicle could be splitted to produce warmth on one side and coolness on the other side.
All of that did not satisfy me because I was hungry for something different. I wanted to hear Christ preached not about the new vehicle. I was hungry for God but someone was serving me an imbalanced spiritual diet.
Jeremiah 3:15 says, "And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding"( KJV).
Anytime you have the privilege to preach the gospel, either during evangelism or on the pulpit, speak about Christ not about you. The knowledge of Christ is what transforms not about your latest designer or vehicle.
In 1 Corinthians 3:1, Paul says, "but we preach Christ crucified...". The message Paul and the apostles preached that shook the then known world was Christ.
If you want to experience true revival, see sinners saved, discipled and baptized, preach Christ. Let him be your message.
