HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT? Pt.3

July 17, 2026 · Lanre Oyeleke · 9 views

Acts 19:2 *“Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” he asked them. “No,” they replied, “we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit*” (NLT)

*THE PERSON OF THE HOLY SPIRIT* (b)

A proper knowledge about the Holy Spirit will help us to fellowship with Him appropriately. The same applies to knowing God correctly through His word. When God is known correctly, our worship becomes accurate, richer and deeper.

The name "Holy Spirit" should not just be a church word on our lips. We must understand that He is a person we can relate with. This should be a reality in our daily walk with the Lord. That is why we must understand His personality and His nature.

*II. He has emotions*

Ephesians 4:30 says *"And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption*" (NLT)

In the text above, to “grieve” the Holy Spirit is “to cause to feel sorrow, pain, unhappiness, or distress.” Because the Holy Spirit have emotions, we can make Him feel distressed and sorrowful through careless living, disobedience and sin.

We are a people bought with a price. That price is the precious blood of Jesus Christ: *"you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies*" (1 Cor 6:20 NIV). The Holy Spirit is a witness of the transaction that redeemed us.

As the third Person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit, feels sorrowful, sad and unhappy when the redeemed of the Lord does not live up to their new creation status. He feel disappointed with our little compromise here and there.

Let us examine this issue from this angle; If you have a lover or someone that is keenly interested in you, one thing you will always avoid is offense as a wise person. You will not want to offend the person especially If the fellow is superior to you.

That is how our relationship with the Holy Spirit should be. A relationship devoid of offense. A relationship where our desire will be to make him happy always instead of making Him feel sorrowful. You can only get the best from someone who is happy with you. His graces will flow directly towards you.

Mature believers are keen about this more than using Him to perform. They want to please Him and not grieve Him.  Those that reduced Him to tongues and "chaotic" force in church meetings may miss deeper dimension about him because the Spirit's expression through them will be limited.

If you have ever read about Kathryn Khulman, one thing she held dear all her life was her relationship with the Holy Spirit. She emphasized not grieving the Holy Spirit and she lived it. Little wonder why her life was exceptional.

There is more the Spirit can do for us and through us If we are willing to please Him.

Action point

Father, I receive the grace not to grieve your Spirit. Help me to walk worthy of Him In Jesus
