Matthew 6:19 *“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal*".
Anytime I visit ancient cities in South West Nigeria, there are some old houses that are conspicuous due to its ancient design. Some of those houses were owned by the wealthy people of that time. Today, they are all gone.
Some of those houses now have brown roofs, though some are still standing but you'll see signs of degradation and decay all over it. In some towns, those houses have been abandoned and left for insects, rodents and mammals to live in.
However, some of those houses were the treasure some worked hard to build, some cheated or stole to build them. They forgot eternity and focused on laying up earthly treasures only. They trended in their time but lost their place with God.
Almost all the treasures humans store on earth is subject to decay and exhaustion. The rich men of yesteryears are gone and forgotten. They only existed as men of yesterday but they are not remembered today.
Mankind have invested billions in earthly treasures that are perishable. Is it the houses, cars, jewelries, make-up kits, clothes and shoes? These are the treasure store of some and they even boast about it. Jesus said these things are prone to be eaten up by insects or stolen by thieves.
In verse 20, this is Jesus' admonition: *"Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal*".
Now, the question is: how do I store up treasures in heaven? The answer to this is two-sided. First, storing treasures in heaven entails investing your life in eternal things like evangelism, missions, kingdom service.
Second, it involves investing your resources into the kingdom. Instead of buying the most expensive jewelry, clothes, cars or shoes, the money can be used to support missions, kingdom programs, needy people, orphans and widows.
It pains me that believers are some of the biggest investors in vanity. I have seen companies owned by believers sponsor events and programmes that adds no value to humanity and the kingdom.
God is looking for men He will entrust with kingdom wealth. Men who will re invest it into the kingdom for eternal purposes not those who will invest in entertainment that gratifies the flesh.
We overlook these things yet God sees them as eternal investments that cannot perish. When will you start investing your life and resources in things that matters to God?
Father, I receive the grace to invest my life and resources in eternal things In Jesus name.
