LK1:28- And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
The angel of God was sent to Mary to deliver unto her the goodnews that changed the entire course of human history. Mary was stunned because she never expected such at that time.
Mary wasn't the only virgin at that time in Israel,but the favor of God singled her out from the crowd to be used by God specially. I personally believe that If Mary wasn't a virgin, God would still favor her because it wasn't her virginity that earned her favor.
In my personal opinion, God may have chosen a virgin so that the birth of Jesus wouldn't be controversial but all we know is that she was favored amongst many virgins.
