Ephesians 1:17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. NIV
If I ask, "do you want to know God better"? I'm very sure your answer will be a resounding 'yes'. In almost all religion of the world, the adherents are trying to seek God and to know his ways. In a bid to know God better, man-made means of worship and ethical code of conduct were instituted. I read about an oriental religion where a man cannot sleep with his wife more than once in a month. Sex is strictly regulated for couples in that religion. That's the extent of sacrifice they're making to know God better.
From scriptures, especially the opening text, it is clear that the way to know God better is to have the Spirit of wisdom and revelation working in us. That's one of several workings of the Holy Spirit. God cannot be discovered like scientists do discover facts. God can only be revealed to us by the Spirit. Religion is trying to discover God through institutional codes and rituals. For the believer in Christ, it is good to read books and listen to tapes but what you'll get first from those things is spiritual information. Revelation cannot be taught, it can only be imparted by the Spirit of God.
If you want to have deep insight into spiritual things so that you can know God better, turn to the Holy Spirit. Insight/ revelation is not limited to seeing visions as some may think. It starts with knowing the word of God accurately. The Spirit of God is the author of scriptures. Whenever he wants to reveal God to his people, he reveals what is written in the word of God about God. You may have been studying the scriptures for years like a ritual but the moment the Spirit of revelation step into your study, you'll understand and know God better through his word.
Father, baptize me with the Spirit of wisdom and revelation so that I may know God better in Jesus name.
