Colossians 1:9 So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding. (10) Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better. NLT
In the new testament, several Greek words were translated as knowledge. In the opening text, Apostle Paul prayed that the Colossian church will have complete knowledge. The word 'knowledge' in that text is from the Greek "Epignosis". This is full discernment. It is a precise and accurate knowledge about a thing not guess work. This seems to be height of the various types of knowledge any man can have. Paul prayed that the Colossian brethren will have accurate knowledge about God's will and that they will have spiritual wisdom and understanding.
That prayer is very deep. Man's desire often is to know the will of God in every area of his life. In fact, part of the reason why religion was invented is because there's a search for something- the will of God. In Christ, we are already in God's will for his eternal salvation plan. However, there are other things we do not know which leaves us with many questions most times. Inability to know God's will on issues is the reason for so many guesses even in biblical matters. Paul prayed that God should give them spiritual wisdom and understanding because spiritual wisdom and understanding is superior to that of the secular. Some seek secular knowledge neglecting the spiritual. While the latter is taught, the former is imparted by the Spirit.
The moment you begin to walk in "Epignosis", spiritual wisdom and understanding, your life will become pleasing to God and you'll produce fruits. Can anything be more than this in our walk with the Lord? We are reading about Paul and the saints of old today because their prayers were focused on things that matter to God not on mundane things. Their generation prayed unusual prayers and they lived an unusual life. The result they produced and the commendations they got were unusual. Shouldn't we follow in their footsteps? Are you desiring to grow spiritually? Do you want to walk in accurate knowledge about God's will? Pray this prayer often.
PRAYER Father, I ask that you give me complete knowledge of your will, spiritual wisdom and understanding so that my life can be fruitful and pleasing to you in Jesus name.
