Paul prayed that the Colossian brethren will be strengthened with ALL of God's glorious power. Power in this text is from the Greek word "Dunamis". This word is used 120 times in the New Testament. Loosely, the word refers to “strength, power, or ability.” It is the root word of our English words dynamite, dynamo, and dynamic. However, we need to look deeply at that verse of scripture to know the meaning&purpose of this power Paul prayed about. As a simple rule of bible interpretation, context determines meaning of a word. For example in Acts1:8, power was mentioned. The purpose of that power is to be a witness of the gospel.
In this verse of scripture, the purpose of this power is for endurance and patience. While in other portions of scriptures, power could be used in context of performing miracles and doing visible exploits. Paul is saying you need power for endurance in this Christian race and to be patient in your walk with God. Hardly do we think of power in that light. We often ask for power to conquer evil forces and to do the miraculous. Some are even asking God for city-taking power but rarely will you find people fast and pray for the power to endure trials, persecutions and the things that want to drag them away from the faith.
Dearest, you need power to endure and be patient. It takes a dynamic power to remain in the faith and to stand strong these last days. One of the qualities an athlete must have is endurance. Imagine a football match that extend into extra time, most times the players are tired to play at extra time but endurance is the reason why they remain on the pitch. We need that kind of staying power in our walk of faith. In addition, we need that power to be patient with God. Patience is not an easy virtue especially in a world that present us with get-it-quick alternatives. If you care about your walk with God this perilous time, join me to pray this kingdom prayer.
