IT MUST BE FROM A WILLING HEART

Ex 25:2 “Speak to the children of Israel, that they bring Me an offering. FROM EVERYONE WHO GIVES IT WILLINGLY WITH HIS HEART YOU SHALL TAKE MY OFFERING. NKJV

Kenneth E. Hagin of blessed memory wrote a powerful book titled "Midas Touch". He wrote that book to correct some of the common extremes of preachers in the Faith movement on the subject of prosperity. He himself was once a victim but he corrected himself and aligned with the word before he passed on. Till date, some of the extremes he corrected in that book are still in practice.

There are preachers who claim to have the anointing for raising millionaires and billionaires. The moment they get talking about their heroics in helping people out of poverty, the next thing that follows is fund raising. This they do by coercion and manipulation. It is a slap on redemption for someone who claim to have millionaire and billionaires raising anointing yet cannot raise missionaries that will reach the unreached. I've read my bible from Genesis to Revelation, I didn't see anyone with that "dangerous" anointing.

An elder shared his experience with me. He attended an evangelistic meeting where the evangelist told everyone of them in the meeting to empty their pocket. He was a young believer then, he took the last dime in his pocket and gave it as an offering under "evangelistic pressure". After the service, he trekked home because he had no transport fare on him again. Some of you have been there before. You have parted with gifts or monies that didn't come from your heart because someone put you under pressure instead of giving you biblical reasons why you should give and allowing the Holy Spirit do the work of conviction.

Even Abraham's attempt to offer Isaac as a sacrifice was willing, God saw it in Him and he was commended for his willingness. God doesn't accept any offering that is not given willingly. From the old testament to the new, the nature of God as regards the matter of giving is unchanging.

In Paul's epistle to the Corinthians in 2Corinthians9:7, Paul said, "So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver". You may need to read that again patiently. The moment giving( any form of giving at all) comes with threats, curses, arm twisting and spurious promises of "special things" God will do when you give your money or substance, all of these are against the standard of God. A new testament believer can never come under curse for not giving.

If we understand stewardship of money as new testament believers, what to give and the percentage to give will no longer be an issue to argue about. We'll give out of understanding that we own nothing but God owns everything, we are just stewards. God doesn't accept unwilling offerings given under pressure or threat. There's no gift you want to give to God that is greater than what God gave- Christ. Any other thing you give ranks 2nd. If giving under Moses(law) was to be done willingly, how much more under the dispensation of Christ(Grace).

As a preacher of the gospel, simply tell your congregants the purpose their giving will serve and teach them to love God, His kingdom and stewardship. If they understand these concepts, they will give willingly. When believers grow in the knowledge of the word, giving becomes a life style because there's an understanding. Coercion during giving is not God's way.

It is not on record that the apostles in the early church asked their listeners to empty their pocket or bank account neither did they resort to threat and curses. Giving was done willingly in the early church. They must have told them why they should give and the purpose it will serve.

In Acts 4:33-34, the bible says, "With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all- that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales".

When you approach the offering plate, check your heart to be sure there's a willingness to give.

Action point

Don't give against your will, God won't accept it.
