HIS WILL OR YOURS?

Col1:9 So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding( NLT).

Ardent readers of our devotional know my relationship story while on campus. Then, I felt it wouldn't be a bad idea to take someone home to momma since I was close to the finish line.

The Spirit of God warned me against my decision but I ignored his promptings. I felt the sister was born again, brilliant and beautiful. In fact, my room mate match-made us before we struck a relationship deal. The several "cooler ministrations" prompted that.

My room mates concluded she must be the one for me after they joined me to eat her delicious meals. However, in my prayer time, the Spirit of God said "No". I forced myself to the point of self-conviction about her and shut the door against wise counsel from mature people.

At a time, I quoted scriptures to God in prayers telling him that he promised to grant me the desires of my heart. Then Lord said, "Do not use scriptures to your destruction." I was manipulating scriptures to suit myself when it was clear that she wasn't God's will for me.

Dearest, it is good to tell God what you want in prayers, but it is much better to ask him for his will to be done in your life. One of the hardest prayers to pray is, "Father, let your will be done."

It was God's will for Jesus to die on the cross. He knew that his assignment included the greatest sacrifice ever but in his distress he said, "O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt (Matthew 26:39).

There are certain things that are plainly revealed in scriptures. For those things, we don't need to ask God for His will to be done because His will has been revealed. In that case, all we need do is to be specific in our request.

However, there are areas in our lives that aren't clearly specified in the bible. There's no place in the bible where the name of your future wife is written neither will you find an instruction on the next step to take as regards your job or business. These things must be revealed by the Spirit.

However, we can either choose for ourselves and go our own way or we ask God to allow his will be done in those areas. So many are afraid of telling God to reveal his will to them or say they are afraid of God's will prevailing over theirs.

One of the signs of a life that is totally sold out to God is the ability to surrender to His will. The babes and immature loathe the idea of God's will.

Carnality is the reason some singles think God may give them what they don't like so they go "hunting" and they "hunt" themselves out of God's will.

The day you come to know God as a loving father, you'll cease from trying to impose your will on Him. God cannot give you a bad thing.

Jesus said, "Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! (Matthew 7:9-11 NIV).

Do not let people misrepresent God to you as a bad father. He said, "For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord . “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope."( Jer 29:11 NLT).
