EVEN AT OLD AGE

Psalms 71: [17] *O God, you have taught me from my earliest childhood, and I constantly tell others about the wonderful things you do. [18] Now that I am old and gray, do not abandon me, O God. Let me proclaim your power to this new generation, your mighty miracles to all who come after me* ( NLT).

During my service year( NYSC), I was privileged to attend a meeting with some Christian elders in Asaba city. One of them who heard I was a youth corper lamented and said, "I regret not knowing Christ when I was a youth corper" ( paraphrase). He envied me because he saw in me a vibrant young man serving the Lord, something he wished he were in his youthful days.

Another set of people I have seen are men who served the Lord in their youthful days but ended up doing nothing in old age except to tell stories. Now, their lack lustre attitude towards the things of God is not because of their health or geriatric issues but because they backslid.

Some old people think evangelism, prayer, church attendance and other activities are for young men. They sit back pushing the young ones forward under the guise of "we are praying for you" but in their hearts, they are cold and lukewarm. That's not the kind of old man I want to be.

I love the prayer of the Psalmist in the opening text. He said, "NOW THAT I AM OLD and gray, do not abandon me, O God. LET ME PROCLAIM YOUR POWER TO THIS NEW GENERATION, your mighty miracles to all who come after me". The writer of this Psalm must be an old man.

In the previous verse, he spoke about how he had been telling others about the wonders of God from childhood so at old age, he doesn't have plans to stop. That should be the desire of every child of God not to have a retirement plan in kingdom service.

Due to waning strength and rigours of administration in ministry, it is proper to retire from administrative duties to make room for effectiveness  but it is not proper to retire from soul winning, preaching, intercession and kingdom service in general. We can retire from administrative duties but we don't retire in kingdom service such as mentioned previously. With the little knowledge I have in theology and ministry, at old age I see myself teaching and raising younger ministers to do ministry better.

Instead of dreaming to be idle at old age and telling stories while waiting for death, catch a dream for that season of your life in God and start praying towards it. Old men and women can still do great things for God.

John Wesley was on fire till his old age and it was said of him that he still prayed 2 hours daily in his waking moment. Some young men cannot pray for 1 hour.

At the age of 83, Pastor Kumuyi is still preaching round the world, Pastor Adeboye still preach at over 80. At 79 before he slept in the Lord, Reinhard Bonnke was still preaching though he had handed over ministry administration to a younger evangelist. Give me one reason I should not proclaim Christ at old age?

I anchor my faith on this scripture for many years now and I want you to join me to do same and confess it aloud:

Action Point:

*Even in old age I will still produce fruit; I will remain vital and green. [15] I will declare, “The Lord is just! He is my rock! There is no evil in him!” ( Psalms 92: 14-15, NLT Emphasis mine).
