I watched a Christian film where a man derogatorily spoke about a believer who went to fellowship with other brethren. He described fellowship as meeting your fellows in the ship. Though he meant to spite the believer but a deeper look at his description shows there is an element of truth in what he said.
Fellowship is about intimacy. Our intimacy should start with God and then with the brethren who are of likeminds and common pursuit- the kingdom.
The church is established for us to have fellowship with God: "So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. [7] But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin" (1 Jn 1:6-7 NLT)
When we come to a living church, we must come in contact with the God of the church. When people are seeking to know more of God and fellowship with him, they must find him in places we call church.
Another angle to the issue of fellowship is the angle of fellowshiping with other believers. No man can outgrow this because it is a command. Hebrews 10:25 says, "not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching"( Hebrews 10:25).
Our physical meetings should not be neglected for online meetings. Witches don't meet online, why should God's people neglect physical meetings? If all you do is online church, who will join you during wedding? Who will christen your child? If you lose a loved one at old age, who will handle the burial? Church is family.
Going to church to fellowship with other believers is not "Old school". It is the pattern laid down for us right from bible days. It is the apostolic pattern you and I must follow.
Acts 2:42 says, "And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers".
Fellowship was not neglected in the early church. They did those exploits because they did not neglect fellowshiping together. This is one of the many reasons the church exist.
