The best way to explain the scripture above is to paint the scenario of a mother that is assigned to nurture a baby till he/she becomes an adult with a specified weight, height and character just like his father. That will take years and thorough effort, christ has a stature that all Christians MUST attain.
The ministry gifts are to nurture the body of Christ till we all become like Christ in stature(not physical but from the spiritual standpoint). The book of Ephesian was talking about the height, depth, length&breadth of Christ's love, that is simply the fullness of the measure of Christ's stature, we are not exactly like him until we attain that.
Emphasis on the life of Christ is what makes a meaningful ministry, and the desire to live out that life is what makes grace available, then living the life is
What glorifies Christ. Till we all measure-up to Christ's stature, we won't stop.
