To edify means to build-up like when you're building a house. It also means to charge as you would a battery, this is the new testament meaning of edification. None of the ministry gifts should tear down the body of Christ.
When you hear a preacher stirring up hatred in the body of Christ or always pointing accusing fingers in the public to disparage another preacher, such a fellow isn't edifying the body of Christ. Some even go to the extent of claiming to see another preacher in hell or tagging a denomination as hell-bound, such things don't edify but rather, it tears down the body.
If a prophet tells you that your mother is a witch, there is a very high tendency that you'll hate your mother on the spot because such message will stir hatred in the family and as such the purpose of God is defeated. God isn't behind any form of hatred, God is love. Even if God reveals such to a prophet, there are better ways to pass the message without stirring hatred.
Endeavour to always stay under the ministry gift(s) that will edify you and make you become more like Christ.
