Ecclesiastes 7:1*
> _"A good reputation is more valuable than costly perfume. And the day you die is better than the day you are born."_ - (NLT)
Some time ago, I was part of a committee set up to recommend someone for a very sensitive and critical position. We found a man who looked competent on paper. We recommended him. But when his name got to the final decision table, there was strong resistance.
Why? Not because he lacked skill, but because he had a reputation for immorality and financial recklessness. He was good, but he was not trusted. If he had taken care of his private character — his lust and his wasteful spending — his public reputation would not have disqualified him.
I know of another story. A lady joined a church with her family. Along the line, she left because the pastor made immoral advances towards her. Her mother and siblings left too. Till today, that pastor is still pastoring, but the church is almost empty.
His gift did not chase people away. His reputation did. Even if he has repented before God, trust with men takes time to rebuild.
This is the lesson: *Wise men take care of their character, so that their reputation can take care of them.*
Dwight L. Moody was a great American evangelist. One of his quotes struck me deeply. He said:
*"If I take care of my character, my reputation will take care of me."*
That statement is simple, but it carries weight. Your *character* is who you are in secret. It is what you do consistently when no one is watching. Your *reputation* is who people think you are. It is the story people tell about you when you are not in the room.
Many people are chasing reputation but ignoring character. They want people to respect them, but they don't want to do the hard work of becoming respectable. It doesn't work that way. Reputation is a shadow. Character is the real object. Take care of the object, and the shadow will take care of itself.
Don't live with the mindset of "I don't care what people say about me." That is not wisdom, that is pride. Yes, you cannot live your life to please everybody, but you cannot also ignore what people think about you.
You need God to lift you, but you also need the goodwill of men to sustain you. Here is the truth you must never forget: *When crucial decisions about your life are being made, you will not be in the room. Your reputation will be speaking for you.*
If you have a reputation for integrity, people will commit great things into your hands without fear. If you have a reputation for accountability, it becomes easy for people to entrust valuables to you.
If you have a reputation for faithfulness, doors will open for you even before you knock. But if you don't take care of your character, your reputation may become the ceiling that limits how far you can go in life.
So today, ask yourself:
1. What is my private life saying about me?
2. If people really knew how I handle money, time, and relationships, would they trust me more or less?
3. Am I building a life that God and men can vouch for?
Take care of your character. Your reputation will take care of itself.
Father, I receive grace to build a solid character. Help me to live a life that honours You and earns the trust of men. In Jesus name. Amen.
