MENTORING YOUNG VESSELS

March 08, 2021 · Lanre Oyeleke · 2 views

Acts 9:27 But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus. KJV

So many preachers talk about Paul and make reference to his epistles but when we teach about spiritual fatherhood or mentorship, we rarely talk about Barnabas. Unfortunately, the most common story in our preaching and teaching about the duo is their call into the Apostolic(Acts13) & their conflict in Acts 15. Beyond all that, we can learn a few things from Barnabas. We won't be wrong to call Barnabas the spiritual father/ mentor of Paul.

After Paul's conversion, he took Paul around, introduced him to the brethren so that they can be confident about his changed life. From afar, I perceive Barnabas had a good heart and he was a mentor who doesn't give up on his mentee. In their first missionary journey, they took John Mark along but the young man disembarked at Pamphylia. When they decided to revisit the places where they had preached the gospel, Barnabas suggested to Paul that John Mark should go with them but Paul objected and that led to a sharp disagreement that separated them(Acts15:37-41).

Much later, I was surprised at what Paul said about the same John Mark in 2Tim4:11: "Only Luke is with me. Bring Mark with you when you come, for he will be helpful to me in my ministry". The man he rejected in Acts 15 later became helpful to him in ministry. Barnabas saw the potential in John Mark and he knew he was a useful vessel. When mentoring young people, there's a tendency for us to be tired about their inconsistencies, please don't give up. Paul saw Mark's inconsistencies in Acts 15 but Barnabas saw a man that would be useful later in ministry. If you're privileged to have young people around you, do not use their present uninspiring life to judge their glorious future. Keep investing in them, never cease to pray and instruct them. They may act as though they're not paying attention but God is working on their heart to help them overcome their struggles.

Action point

Father, I receive the grace to mentor young vessels patiently in Jesus name.
