FINDING AND KNOWING CHRIST

November 11, 2024 · Lanre Oyeleke · 4 views

John 1:45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” NIV

Something happened to Philip, he must have read and heard the law of Moses and the prophets severally before he told Nathaniel about his discovery as we read in the opening text. The central theme of the law and all that was written in the prophets was centred on one person- Christ.

All the books of the bible was written to point us to the wonderful Jesus that died on the cross of Calvary. Glory!!! He was concealed in the old testament canon but revealed in the new testament.

Philip had been a member of the synagogue, probably he was pious and devoted. He knew what the law and the prophets said about the coming messiah yet he didn't find him not until the day God appointed.

When he found him, he recognized quickly that Jesus was the person the law and the prophets wrote about and he said: "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote-Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph". That must have been a wonderful experience for Philip.

In the days of Philip, many saw Jesus but they didn't recognize him as the one Moses and the prophets wrote about. They derided him, mocked and accused him of operating by demonic spirit. Though they longed for him but they didn't recognize him when he came.

A man can be in the church and yet may not know the head of the church-Christ. It is possible to be devoted in church attendance and activities without a personal fellowship with Christ. It is possible to be a theologian and preacher of many years, Pastor of many branches without having met Christ.

Can you say like Philip: "I have found Christ"? Hearing about Christ is not the same as knowing Christ. There's a need for you and me to study the Jesus Christ from the bible and pray that the Spirit illuminate our hearts about who he really is not just relying on who a preacher say he is.

For sure, you cannot meet the Jesus of the Bible and your life would remain the same. When he comes into our lives, he brings transformation and as we submit to him, there's a gradual conformation to His image. After a miraculous conversion on the road to Damascus and several years of Apostolic ministry, apostle Paul knew how important Christ was and he exclaimed: "That I may know Him"(Phil3:10). Sincerely, that's whom we all need to know and nothing more.

In him dwell all treasures of wisdom and knowledge(Col2:3). At salvation, you met Him and he came into your heart but that's not enough, it is the beginning of a life-long walk with Christ.

Your earnest heart-cry should be: "Jesus, I want to meet you again and again". The quest to know more of him should be a daily thing.

Action point

Father, I have heard your word. I want to meet with Christ and be deeper in the knowledge of Him daily in Jesus name.
