HOW TO LEARN FROM MENTORS Pt.2
Proverbs 4:1 My children, listen when your father corrects you. Pay attention and learn good judgment, NLT
There are several benefits attached to having godly mentors. Those who stand alone without the support of mentors rarely go far in life and destiny. Such persons are prone to errors and their mistakes could be fatal. There's a wisdom you'll get from relating with those that have gone ahead of you in life. In life, we must learn to stand upon the shoulders of those that have gone ahead of us. It should be noted that mentors are not meant to play role of the Holy Spirit in our lives neither are they to lord over us but they're in our lives to give wise counsel and to guide in certain areas of life.
Another way to learn from mentors is to pay attention to what they say. This connotes considering the things they prescribe. It entails giving thoughtful consideration to their counsel. It is not enough to listen, you must give their counsel thoughtful consideration. Severally, I've noticed that some of the people who come around for counseling or who submits for mentorship already have a preconceived idea about what they intend doing. Most time, they're seeking approval and validation from mentors. I'm careful around those who are seeking approval for their ideas and decisions especially when their intention is selfish and unbiblical. The moment I notice that, I'm careful with what I say. Such people set traps with questions waiting for what you'll say. The moment you dance to their tune, they'll let the world know you're behind their decision.
If you want to benefit from the wisdom of a mentor, don't seek validation for your ideas. Go as a learner that is ready to do and apply counsel. Don't make yourself hard to teach. Be humble in learning. Loyal mentees aren't just listeners, they are doers. You cannot tell me that you're a mentee who listen to what the mentor say without doing the things said. Until you start 'doing' or acting upon wise counsel, we can't say you're being mentored. The fruit of biblical mentoring must be seen in the way you go about the things you do. Don't be static. Make progress with counsel. The only exception to this is if the Holy Spirit expressly instruct against the counsel received. However, all things being equal
As long as the Spirit is not saying otherwise, act on the counsel received from your mentor.
