FATHER, OPEN MY EYES
2 Kings 6:17 "And Elisha prayed, and said, Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.".
Fanny J. Crosby was the writer of the famous hymn titled, "Blessed Assurance". She was physically blind. Crosby was visiting her friend Phoebe Knapp as the Knapp home was having a large pipe organ installed. The organ was incomplete, so Mrs. Knapp, using the piano, played a new melody she had just composed. When Knapp asked Crosby, "What do you think the tune says?", Crosby replied, "Blessed assurance; Jesus is mine." In the second stanza of the hymn, Crosby wrote saying: "Perfect submission, perfect delight,VISIONS OF RAPTURE NOW BURST ON MY SIGHT, Angels descending bring from above, Echoes of mercy, whispers of love". How did a woman without physical sight see the visions of rapture bursting on her sight? There must be something more than meets the eye.
Aside the physical sight that make up the five senses of humans, there's an inner sight that we possess that can see into the supernatural realm. Some are aware of this sight while others are not. Spiritualists&occultic people are fully aware of this spiritual sight and they take advantage of it. Most of us are too conscious of what the physical eyes can see not miniding our inner eyes. There's so much to see in the spirit realm that we're yet to see. What we see spiritually determines to a large extent the strength of our faith in God. The story of Elisha's servant is the basis for my assertion. In 2 Kings 6, the king of Syria commanded his soldiers to surround Dothan where Elisha was. The servant of Elisha woke up in the morning to see their city surrounded with chariots. He said, "...Alas! My master, how shall we do"? He was afraid because he was living in the sense realm of physical sight. Elisha replied(Vs 16) saying, "...FEAR NOT: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them". What Elisha saw with his inner eyes gave him so much confidence amidst trouble. That's the power of seeing beyond the ordinary.
In verse 17: "And Elisha prayed, and said, Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.". Hallelujah!!! The moment he saw that they were surrounded by a far greater power, his mind was at rest. From today, God need to open your inner eyes to see so that your heart can be at rest. If all you see is what your physical eyes sees, you're not seeing enough. I don't know of any man of faith who saw only with the physical eyes. To a large extent, your rootedness in the faith is a function of what you see with your inner eyes. Paul called that eyes the eyes of your heart. Paul knew the importance of seeing beyond the ordinary, he prayed thus for Ephesian believers: "I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people,". Eph1:18. You can always pray the same prayer for yourself.
Father, open the eyes of my heart so that I can see your glory.
