Psalm 130:3-4 If you, Lord, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve you (NLT)
Recently, I read the opening text during a bible reading session in the church and my heart was set on fire about the depth of God's forgiveness to sinful mankind. I have read this portion of scriptures severally but I didn't see the light in that text until recently.
The Psalmist made it clear that forgiveness is with God. He went further to state the reason for God's forgiveness: "...so that we can, with reverence, serve you( God)" This is profound. God forgives so you and I can serve him with reverence.
Our reverence for God should come from the understanding that he is able to unleash his wrath on sinners and send us to the hottest part of hell without an option of seeking forgiveness yet he didn't do that. Instead, he made provision available for our cleansing and forgiveness.
If God had decided not to make provision for forgiveness, you and I will not survive. That's why the Psalmist says in vs 3, "If you, Lord, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand"? The answer is that no one could stand. His wrath would have consumed us all.
In Christ, God has lavished his forgiveness on us all because of the atoning sacrifice of Christ. Paul says, "In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace" Ephesians 1:7 (NIV)
Whenever God remembers the blood of Jesus, it is a reminder of his willingness to forgive our sins.
He doesn't stop there. When he forgives, he forgets. Religion tells you otherwise but my bible tells me your sins are forgiven and forgotten by God after repentance.
"I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more". - Isaiah 43:25 (NIV)
The writer of Hebrews re echoed this truth: "And I will forgive their wickedness, and I will never again remember their sins" ( Hebrews 8:12, NLT).
Under the New Covenant that God made with us through the shedding of Christ's blood on the cross, our sins are forgiven and forgotten. What we have in Christianity is what many are struggling to obtain through religion.
When someone who can unleash his wrath decides to forgive and forget, serve him with great reverence.
CONFESSION: Father, I thank you because my sins are forgiven and forgotten. Thank you for erasing the record that stood against me. Thank you for wiping it clean with the blood of Jesus Christ. I receive grace to extend this grace of forgiveness to others and to serve you with reverential fear in Jesus name. Amen
