DON'T MARRY NABAL

February 22, 2025 · Projectsave International

1 Samuel 25:3 *"Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail: and she was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the house of Caleb*" ( KJV).

Anytime I read the story of Nabal and Abigail, I ask myself, "Why did Abigail marry a fool"? What made her consent to marrying a foolish man like Nabal?

Abigail was a good woman but she married a fool. There are many good sisters and brothers who married a fool like Nabal. It bothers me anytime I see good people marry bad people. That spurred me into writing a book titled: "Nine Reasons Good People Marry Bad People". It is on amazon, you can get yourself a copy.

The meaning of Nabal is folly just as his name suggests: "I know Nabal is a wicked and ill-tempered man; please don’t pay any attention to him. He is a fool, just as his name suggests. But I never even saw the young men you sent"( 1 Samuel 25:25 NLT).

Let's unbundle who Nabal was. The first that was said about him was that he was a wicked man. Yes, Nabal wicked. The men of David gave his herdsmen protection in the wilderness. When the time  to reciprocate their gestures came, he insulted them. He was such an ingrate.

A wicked man is an ungodly man. No child of God should marry someone that is ungodly. Marriage is too important to be done with a nice sinner.

The bible says, "Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness"? (2 Corinthians 6:14 NLT)

Dear child of God, you have no business marrying someone who is not born again. Stop saying he loves you and that's all. In marriage, you'll interact with the with Spirit controlling a person not just that lovey-dovey emotional display.

Another point the bible made about Nabal was about his temper. He was ill-tempered. That made his folly a compound one. The bible has always warned against associating with hot-tempered people.

The bible says, "Control your temper, for anger labels you a fool"( Ecclesiastes 7:9). A hot-tempered person is a fool.

Another scripture says, "Don’t befriend angry people or associate with hot-tempered people" (Proverbs 22:24 NLT).

No matter how lovely a person looks, hot-temper will disfigure their face. The bible made it clear that a hot-tempered person should not be our friend let alone getting involved with them maritally.

Often, I tell people that the seed of domestic violence is inherent in someone with an uncontrollable temper. Stop managing nonsense.

Dear single, stop managing what will ruin you. If the bible says you should not forge friendship with a hot-tempered person, don't you think marriage to such a fellow will be inimical?

Action point

Don't be an Abigail in the house of Nabal. You are too precious to be found in the courtyard of Nabal.
