The angel of God appeared to Gideon telling him he was a mighty man of valour. Gideon must have given himself a second look because there was nothing valiant about him. This was at a time the Midianites oppressed the Israelites.
Further, the angel said, "Then the Lord turned to him and said, “Go with the strength you have, and rescue Israel from the Midianites. I am sending you!" (Judges 6:14 NLT). Now, this man was living among a people that were oppressed and badly treated.
Their oppressors must have over powered their armies yet an angel told Gideon to undertake the task of liberating his people. Gideon's response was this: “But Lord,” Gideon replied, “how can I rescue Israel? My clan is the weakest in the whole tribe of Manasseh, and I am the least in my entire family!” ( Judges 6:15).
He saw his weakness and inadequacies. He gave reasons why it was impossible for him to undertake the task of liberation. Listen to the angel's response: "The Lord said to him, “I WILL BE WITH YOU. And you will destroy the Midianites as if you were fighting against one man"( vs 16).
Anytime God sends you to undertake a task, he knows your abilities, strengths and weaknesses. He knows you don't have the power to execute the task but one thing he is assuring you about his presence saying "I WILL BE WITH YOU". When Gideon disqualified himself, God told assured him of his presence. He fought the battle and won.
When God ordains or commission you to do something, stop disqualifying yourself. In the first place, he is not calling you to do a thing because you can do it. He calls because he finds in you a yielded vessel he can back and give all the support to.
Yoruba people call God "Oran omo nise fayati", meaning 'one who sends his child on errand and gives full support or backing". Are you afraid God is calling you to undertake a task bigger than you? He'll never call us to undertake task we can handle. It is always bigger than our natural abilities so that we can trust him and keep looking up to him.
Paul says, "But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us"( 2 Corinthians 4:7).
Beware of what you can do on your own without God.
