As a starter in ministry, all I had was leadership experience from campus and National Youth Service Christian fellowship but no formal training whatsoever. One day, while in talks with Pastor Tony, he said, "Lanre, you need to be trained". I took that as a challenge and applied to be trained for the assignment. I am grateful to God I listened to him.
Ever since, I have seized several training opportunities that will improve me and build my capacity for the assignment. Till now, I'm still under training. For me, it is a life long adventure. You cannot outgrow training.
For any vision to thrive properly, the carrier of that vision must be adequately trained. No one becomes a medical doctor because he see himself performing a surgery in the dream. No matter the dream, to achieve that, he must go through a medical school.
A butcher and a surgeon appears to be doing the same thing- cutting of flesh. However, no one in his or her right senses will submit himself under the knife of a butcher for surgical operation. Why? A butcher is trained to use knife to kill while a surgeon is trained to use knife to cure and save lives.
What an untrained person will struggle to do in ten years, a trained person might achieve in 5 years. Zeal is not enough. Carrying a burden for your assignment is not enough. You need to be trained for it either formally or informally. I see traces of mental laziness among the people of faith when it comes to getting trained for what the Lord has asked them to do.
In other areas, they can spend millions but when it relates to their assignment especially ministry, they'll start asking why a training program cost so much and why bible is not free. Same persons go to the cinema paying heavily but the moment it is time to sacrifice for their vision, they tune off.
There is nothing God has laid in your heart to do that doesn't have a "Know how". It is through training you acquire the knowledge on how to go about it. If you don't want that vision to die unfulfilled, go get the required training and keep taking advantage of every opportunity to get trained.
